Beach Volleyball is a team sport played on sand that originated in California, USA, during the 1920s. Initially, it was a recreational activity with simple rules played on the beach.
However, as the sport gained popularity and its rules were refined, beach volleyball gradually evolved into an international sport and was included in the Olympic Games in 1996.

Basic Rules

The basic rules of beach volleyball are similar to those of traditional volleyball, but there are some notable differences. The game is typically played on a sand court that is 8 meters long and 16 meters wide.
Each team consists of two players, and the court is divided by a net that is 2.43 meters high (for men's matches) or 2.24 meters high (for women's matches). The objective of the game is to hit the ball over the net so that the opposing team cannot return it or hit the ball into the opponent's court.
The match is played in a best-of-three-sets format. The first two sets are played to 25 points, and the third set (deciding set) is played to 15 points. In each set, a team must lead by at least 2 points to win. If the score is tied at 25-25 or 15-15, the game continues with deuce rules until one team gains a 2-point lead.

Techniques and Tactics

The techniques and tactics of beach volleyball share many similarities with indoor volleyball, but the unique nature of the sand court requires players to have additional adaptability and skill.
1. Serving: Serving starts the game and can be categorized into jump serves and high-arch serves. Jump serves can increase the ball's speed and spin, making it harder for the opponent to receive. High-arch serves are more conservative and are suitable for more relaxed situations.
2. Receiving: Given the soft nature of the sand court, players need to focus on control when receiving. Receiving techniques include forearm passing and side passing, requiring players to accurately judge the ball’s trajectory and maintain body stability.
3. Setting and Spiking: Setting is the foundation of offense and commonly involves forearm passes and overhead passes. Spiking is a critical offensive technique where players must accurately judge the ball's position in the air and hit it forcefully to disrupt the opponent’s defense.
4. Defense: Defense includes blocking and receiving. Blocking is an effective way to prevent the opponent from scoring by jumping and using the arms to intercept the ball. Receiving involves handling the opponent's spikes and serves, requiring quick reflexes and agile movement.

Training Activities

Beach volleyball requires high levels of physical fitness and skill. Training typically includes the following components:
1. Technical Training: This involves repeated practice of fundamental skills such as serving, receiving, setting, spiking, and defense. Through technical training, players can improve the stability and accuracy of their actions.
2. Physical Training: Beach volleyball players need strong physical attributes, including strength, speed, endurance, and flexibility. Physical training includes running, swimming, strength training, and beach sprints to enhance overall muscle and cardiovascular fitness.
3. Tactical Training: Tactical training involves team coordination, tactical planning, and understanding strategies. By simulating match scenarios, players can improve their ability to handle complex situations and coordinate with teammates.
4. Mental Training: Given that beach volleyball is often played under intense sunlight, athletes need strong mental resilience. Mental training includes building self-confidence, managing pressure, and enhancing concentration to handle the various challenges of the game.

Global Impact

As an international sport, beach volleyball has gained popularity worldwide. Countries and regions across continents have established beach volleyball leagues and tournaments, showcasing unique styles and techniques from different nations.
Beach volleyball combines competitiveness with entertainment, displaying athletes' skill and perseverance in the sun and wind.
It not only tests players' technical abilities and physical fitness but also requires excellent tactics and teamwork. With ongoing development and promotion, the sport is expected to attract more participants and leave a more profound impact globally.
